This study was commissioned by the College of Science, University of Nevada Reno (UNR), to assess the benefits of geological research and service by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) and to consider future synergies between NBMG and the other geoscience units at UNR, while maintaining the core mission of NBMG.

The study involved two steps: 1) review and assess the benefits derived from NBMG’s past geologic research and services, and 2) assess how best to focus available resources in the future. After studying NBMG’s past publications, a questionnaire was sent to over 1,800 users of geologic information in Nevada. The purpose of the campaign was to assess how users perceive the usefulness of geologic research and services of NBMG, both in terms of its quality as well as in monetary terms. The results of the questionnaire are reported in this publication.

About the author: Subhash B. Bhagwat has studied in India, Germany, and the United States. After a bachelor’s degree in physics in India, he obtained a graduate degree in Mining Engineering and a PhD. in Resource Economics at the Technical University in Berlin, Germany. He also earned an M.B.A. degree from the University of Illinois. After several years of employment in industry and academia in Germany, he joined the Illinois State Geological Survey in 1979 and headed the economics unit. In his 27 years of service in Illinois he conducted research on economic aspects of coal, oil, industrial minerals, water, minerals processing, and engineering applications. He also taught economics of raw materials at the University of Illinois and published about one hundred reports, articles, and research papers. Among his most widely recognized contributions is the development and application of a methodology to estimate the economic benefits of geological research to society. Aside from Illinois, the approach has been applied in Kentucky, Ohio, Spain, and now Nevada. Subhash is internationally recognized for his contributions and has been awarded Fulbright fellowships to lecture in Germany and Kazakhstan as well as to conduct water resources management research in India.
