The Ruby Dome quadrangle, Nevada, exposes a central part of the metamorphic infrastructure of the Ruby Mountains–East Humboldt Range metamorphic core complex. Much of this bedrock comprises Cretaceous and Paleogene granites that intrude amphibolite-facies metamorphosed Prospect Mountain Quartzite (Cambrian and Neoproterozoic) and strata assigned to the marble of Verdi Peak (Ordovician and Cambrian). These strata form a ghost stratigraphic framework, pervasively intruded by granite sills and other bodies, that outlines the pre-folding Ogilvie thrust fault and the northeastward-facing Lamoille Canyon fold nappe and Box Canyon recumbent syncline below it. The nappe here bends, becomes detached as a thrust fault, and disharmonically loses amplitude southwestward, where it faces the north-facing King Peak fold-and-thrust nappe. A brittle Miocene low-angle normal fault structurally superposes part of the King Peak nappe onto originally deeper rocks. Steep normal faults and basalt dikes also cut the infrastructure. Late Pleistocene glaciation extensively sculpted the region, deposited lateral valley moraines, and left a legacy of alpine glacial lakes that have yielded core records of Holocene climatic variations.
