The Cobre SE quadrangle lies in the northern Toano Range, which is coextensive with the Goshute Mountains to the south (fig. 1), both in eastern Elko County, Nevada. Along with the Pequop Mountains, the Toano Range lies between highly extended terrane of the East Humboldt Range and Wood Hills on the west (fig. 1) and the Pilot Range on the east (Miller et al., 1987; Snoke and Miller, 1988; Thorman et al., 1987). The highlands that define the Toano Range are bounded by broad valleys on the east and west, with the eastern valley being at much lower elevation than the western valley. Typical relief from mountain crest to adjacent valley axis is 900 m to the eastern valley and 600 m to the western valley. Late Pleistocene lakes created distinctive beach deposits in both basins: Lake Bonneville (1,582 m highstand) formed on the east and Lake Waring (1,763 m) on the west.
This map of the Cobre SE quadrangle is related to a larger study of the Toano Range by Glick (1987) and her collaborators. Rocks and structures adjacent to the quadrangle play key roles for understanding aspects of the geology of the Cobre SE quadrangle. A simplified geologic map of the northern Toano Range is shown in figure 2 to illustrate some of these rocks and structures.
