Ichthyosaurs, giant reptiles up to 60 feet long, once roamed the sea that covered western Nevada during the Triassic Period about 200 million years ago. From a painting by Larry Jacox. In 1977, the Nevada State Legislature enacted a law making the icthyosaur the State's official fossil. The bones of these ancient sea creatures have been found at many places in the Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, and can be viewed by visitors.
